About Michael Brohawn

“For over a decade I managed policies for trustees and financial institutions
across the country and it has provided me with a real-world grounding
in the use of life insurance for high-net-worth clients.”

“For over a decade I managed policies for trustees and financial institutions across the country and it has provided me with a real-world grounding in the use of life insurance for high-net-worth clients.”

After a successful stint in personal production and as an executive in a leading high-end life insurance brokerage firm, I, along with two partners, founded Insurance Trust Monitor (ITM) in 2007, the first full-service trust-owned life insurance (TOLI) outsource firm in the country. After a merger in 2015 with two other related firms, the resulting company, ITM TwentyFirst, has become the largest life insurance policy management firm in the country with over 175 team members and over two hundred clients, including some of the country's leading trust, banking, and financial firms. Currently retaining a minority ownership position, I still help out when called upon.

I developed the policy remediation process that set ITM TwentyFirst apart in the marketplace, providing trustees with a prudent process to procure and manage life insurance in a trust setting.

These same skills and processes are utilized in my work as an insurance advisor to policy owners and trustees as well as family offices, fee-based advisors, attorneys, and CPAs. I help them maximize the value of existing life insurance or procure new coverage custom fitted for a particular situation.

Throughout my career, I have enjoyed educating peers about life insurance, especially in the trust, accounting, and legal community. I was privileged to be asked to develop the life insurance curriculum at Cannon Financial Institute’s Unique and Hard to Value Assets program held on the University of Notre Dame Campus in South Bend, Indiana. I have spoken to industry associations as diverse as Top of The Table, Texas Bankers Association, Fiduciary and Risk Management Association (FIRMA), American Bankers Association (ABA), and the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA). At ITM TwentyFirst, I founded ITM TwentyFirst University that provided continuing education for thousands of peers. While there, I wrote The TOLI Handbook, a guide for trustees, regulators, and advisors. I have been asked to contribute to articles in industry publications, as well as the Wall Street Journal and last year wrote my first book, The Wealth Advisors Guide to Life Insurance.

Born and raised in Maryland, there will always be a fondness for the beauty of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, though I now enjoy living in Florida, a stone's throw from the Atlantic with my wife, Kathy.
